China: Globalization and Glocalization

Graduate Conference Department of Chinese Studies, Leiden University
6-7 September 2011

Panel 1 Religions on Display in China: Global and Glocal

An inquiry into the display of religions in contemporary China is in nature the inquiry into the intertwined relationships between the force of global economics, the reactions of local agencies, and attitudes of the state. Religion as a lens to explore this issue has special merit to layout a temporal and spatial trajectory of the diverse forms regarding the dynamics between the locals, the elites, and the state. The display of religion has continually been a contested field within this dynamics. As China welcomes both international and domestic tourists, the meaning of religion has become more multifaceted. This panel aims to understand the meaning and the face of religion in China by reconsidering the role of religion from imperial to modern China, from the center to the periphery. Any proposed topics that fit within the framework of religion in China are welcome. Unfortunately, We cannot guarantee reimbursement for travelling costs yet, but will, in any case, be able to offer private housing.

Proposals for papers, preferably in English, should be sent by e-mail, as a Word document, maximum one page in length, accompanied by a two page CV, to the following address: mwc511@gmail.com. These should be sent before June 8, 2011. Proposal acceptations will be confirmed by June 29, at the latest, and the completed texts must be provided by August 31. The conference will take place at Room 148, Cleveringaplaats 1 2311 BD Leiden, the Netherlands.

Panel 3 China and ‘the Global’: Visual and Material Culture

In this panel different case studies showcase interactions in the field of visual and material culture and put them in relation to China and ‘the Global’. Dutch and Flemish agency and cultural identity serve as the panel’s focal point in analyzing Chinese objects as works of art and transmitters of (cultural) information.Case studies include: Chinese-European objects in the treatise of a Flemish Jesuit around 1670, Chinese export art in 18th century Dutch collections and the contemporary designs of a “Holland Village” in Shenyang. The panel seeks to study its subjects with art historical as well as cultural studies methods to gain new insights on the links between art and the representation of culture, china and China. We look for one more MPhil or PhD student interested in presenting a case study within the outlined framework. We can, unfortunately, not guarantee re-imbursement for travelling costs yet, but will, in any case, be able to offer private housing.  Please send a short CV which includes your contacts and an abstract on what you would like to present to Bogdan Stamoran (stamoran@gmail.com) and/or Anna Grasskamp (a.k.grasskamp@hum.leidenuniv.nl). The abstract should be no longer than one page and should reach us before June 8.

Panel 4 Chinese Intellectual History: Global and Local interactions

This panel offers a platform to explore how knowledge is constructed, classified and canonized in traditional and modern China. Within this theme, special attention is paid to how local and global dynamics influence each other and how new systems of knowledge are developed. It sees encounters of knowledge with different origins as a trans-cultural process which neither implies a one way process of transmission and reception nor results in a fundamental break with a local past. It deals with issues such as universality and particularity in scientific classification, characteristics of Chinese classical studies, and the re-categorization of concepts such as li (ritual, propriety) into religion, education and custom in traditional and modern China. We look for two more MPhil or PhD students interested in presenting a case study within the outlined framework. We can, unfortunately, not guarantee reimbursement for travelling costs yet, but will, in any case, be able to offer private housing. Please send a short CV which includes your contact details and an abstract on what you would like to present to Rens Krijgsman krijgsman.rens@gmail.com. The abstract should be no longer than one page and should reach us before June 8, 2011.

Wednesday 18 May | Lecture by prof. dr. Lothar von Falkenhausen (UCLA)

Archaeology and its Role in Contemporary China

This lecture will discuss the position of archaeology in the concert of the human sciences in 20th and 21st-century China, the relationship of modern archaeology (introduced into China in the 1920s) to traditional antiquarian practices, and the biographies of two dozen major practitioners in their historical contexts.

Wednesday 18 May, 4 pm
Lipsius building, room 003

Lothar von Falkenhausen obtained a PhD in anthropology at Harvard University in 1988. Having taught at Stanford University and UC Riverside, he came to UCLA in 1993 and was promoted to Professor in 1997. His research concerns the archaeology of the Chinese Bronze Age, preferably focusing on large interdisciplinary and historical issues on which archaeological materials can provide significant new information.

One example of this orientation are his numerous publications on musical instruments (especially chime-bells), culminating in his book Suspended Music (University of California Press, 1993). Other publications concern ancient Chinese bronzes and their inscriptions, ritual, regional cultures, archaeological synthesis, ancient trans-Asiatic contacts, and methodological issues.

As the American co-PI of the ongoing Peking University-UCLA Joint Archaeological Project, he is directing excavations at ancient salt-production sites in the Yangzi River Basin. He serves as editor of the Journal of East Asian Archaeology and of the Early China Special Monographs Series.
